Perturbing microwave beams by plasma density fluctuations

چکیده
The propagation of microwaves across a turbulent plasma density layer is investigated with fullwave simulations. To properly represent a fusion edge-plasma, drift-wave turbulence is considered based on the Hasegawa-Wakatani model. Scattering and broadening of a microwave beam whose amplitude distribution is of Gaussian shape is studied in detail as a function of certain turbulence properties. Parameters leading to the strongest deterioration of the microwave beam are identified and implications for existing experiments are given.

Two-dimensional full wave simulation of microwave reflectometry on Alcator C-Mod
A new 2-D full-wave code has been developed to simulate ordinary (O) mode reflectometry signals caused by plasma density fluctuations. The code uses the finite-difference time-domain method with a perfectly-matched-layer absorption boundary to solve Maxwell’s equations. Huygens wave sources are incorporated to generate Gaussian beams. The code has been used to simulate the reflectometer measure...

متن کاملDesign of a Microwave Frequency Sweep Interferometer for Plasma Density Measurements in Ecr Ion Sources∗
Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources (ECRIS) are among the candidates to support the growing request of intense beams of multicharged ions. Their further development is related to the availability of new diagnostic tools, nowadays consisting of few types only of devices designed on purpose for such compact machines. Microwave Interferometry is a non-invasive method for plasma diagnostics an...
متن کاملSensor for plasma density profile measurement in magnetic fusion machine
A method is presented for the measurement of the electron density in an experimental plasma fusion device by means of microwave reflectometry. Since microwaves with increasing frequency can penetrate deeper into the plasma, it is possible to sample the electron density distribution by frequency-sweep techniques. For the first time the system allows a non-contact measurement of the electron dens...

The experimental and theoretical research carried out at the Institute of Applied Physics resulted in development of a new type of electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRISs)-the gasdynamic ECRIS. The gasdynamic ECRIS features a confinement mechanism in a magnetic trap that is different from Geller's ECRIS confinement, i.e., the quasi-gasdynamic one similar to that in fusion mirror traps....
